Today, Doug and I happily share quiet hours at John and Kim’s vacation rental which they’ve appropriately dubbed the “Owl’s Nest”. It’s a comfy, cozy place and we are grateful to be here.
After morning prayer, Doug calls me into the bedroom to point out three white-tailed deer in the woods outside the window, but they hurry away before we can capture an image.
The air quality is improving, but it’s still smoky enough that we don’t dare spend much time outdoors. Inside the air is fine, so that’s where we remain.
Doug works, for several hours, on notes for an upcoming retreat while I read.

After an early dinner of chicken curry over rice with John and Kim we head to a community Bingo game. We feel welcome at the casual, friendly gathering, even though we’re strangers around these parts.
I’m surprised by five winning cards over the course of the evening amongst our party of four.
The money raised from Bingo goes to improve the historical building pictured here.
We return to the Owl’s Nest for Evening Prayer and then join John and Kim at their house for some apple crumble and frozen yogurt. We stay late at their house, discovering commonalities and marveling over stories of love, and life, and God’s unfailing grace, both in years past and now.
The night breeze seems to promise cleaner air for tomorrow. Tired, but content, I write, anticipating a good night’s sleep and more adventures tomorrow.
How good and how pleasant it is,
when brothers dwell together as one!
– Psalm 133:1
