Here’s our view of Denver from the retreat hermitage last evening.
The same view after dark.

. . . and at sunrise this morning.
Isn’t it amazing how it changes with the time of day?
We’re at the Mother Cabrini Shrine outside Golden, Colorado. This place has been set apart for prayer. Even our bodies respond to the sacred grounds by moving more slowly and breathing more deeply. Our surroundings coax our bodies to rest while our minds ponder God’s beauty and goodness.
We pray the Mass at 7:30am in a chapel dedicated to Saint Mary Francis Cabrini who bought this property in 1901. Denver is one of dozens of places in several countries where Mother Cabrini’s order, the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, provided education and healthcare for children of the poor.

When we meet our friend Rob Vessels for lunch today, we aren’t quite sure what to expect. We haven’t seen him since Evan’s funeral and cannot anticipate the goodness awaiting us. Shared grief over the loss of Evan is no small thing, but then, neither is the joy we find in learning to live always more authentically the days that remain.
Our dinner date with Angela Gaetano at the Sherpa House brings another joyful reunion. Delicious food, lively conversation, and hearts overflowing with love for each other . . . These seem to be the themes of our trip thus far.

Let love be sincere; hate what is evil, hold on to what is good;
love one another with mutual affection; anticipate one another in showing honor.
